Squirrels Nesting Under a Deck in Havelock

This article will analyze and recount a case of a squirrel removal from the underside of a deck. An ongoing issue where squirrels would make nests in the nooks under the deck and cause damage as well as leaving nesting material behind. This also led to many attempts at penetrating the roof.

This visit is located in Havelock, Ontario.

The technicians, before the work is done, must first inspect and confer with the customer or customers on the issue and then must inspect for the source of the activity which, in this case was simply an abundance of squirrel and other wildlife in the area. The only way to get the current squirrel out and to protect the house was a one way door and exclusion.

Exterior Inspection

When the technician arrived on site they performed an exterior inspection of the property and found activity under the deck. The squirrel was still present and had made a nest which it planned on using to have its babies in. Squirrels are diurnal animals that are awake in the day and sleep at night. They have a tendency to penetrate attic and because of their size as well as their incisors which grow throughout their life like rodents they can chew through just about anything. Roof vents are a common access point and once inside they will use the attic as a den where they will store enormous quantities of nuts which they spend most of their lives foraging for. Their baby season is during the early summer or late spring and later on in the fall as winter approaches. This is why the have such an extraordinarily large population as they mate twice a year and can have a litter of up to eight babies at a time.

Initial Measures

The first step was to inspect the decks underside and quote for the exclusion needed to get the current squirrel out and to prevent other squirrels from using it as a nesting sight as well as prevent squirrels from accessing the house itself. All exclusion is done with galvanized steel mesh which a waterproof and long lasting mesh made of steel. This mesh is very difficult for animal to chew through and is adhered to surfaces using steel bolts the are coated with silicone to ensure that water does not get tiny the attic or roof. The process is guaranteed for two year but will last for much longer than that.

Proposed exclusion

The technician sealed off the area the squirrel was using to build its nest with a galvanized steel cage and a one way door. The squirrel was not present at the time, at least visibly but due to the fact that squirrels are protected wildlife a door must be installed for safety purposes. Other areas of the decks underside where excluded to prevent squirrels from accessing the houses interior and to prevent further nesting. The roof was also excluded including twenty four feet of soffit exclusion. Another area squirrel are likely to penetrate.
