Large and Extensive Sealing of Drip Edge Due to Squirrels

Colborne, Ontario– 2020

This article will analyze and recount a case of a squirrel issue in a customer’s attic. It will detail the steps taken in exclusion, by the technician, to remove the squirrel from the attic space.

This visit is located between Highway 2 and Highway 25 in Colborne,  Ontario.

The technicians, before the work and exclusion is done, must first inspect and confer with the customer or customers on the issue and then must inspect for an entry point the animal used to get into the area it is currently occupying. The customer’s original complaint was sounds in the attic happening during the early morning and late evening. A technician was sent to inspect the property and roof for exclusion and an entry point.

Exterior Inspection

When the technician arrives on site, they will perform an exterior inspection of the outside of the house. The initial inspection on-site revealed a severe and serious issue with the roof; the drip edge of the roof was almost entirely open on every side. This allowed any animal, like a squirrel, rodents, and even chipmunks, to simply enter the attic essentially at will. The install inspection was done, and while work could not be done that day, a further quote was sent to the customer with a larger span of time to complete all the work on site.

Initial Measures

The first step was to install a one-way door at the entryway the squirrel used to get inside the attic space. This allows the animal to vacate but prevents it from getting back in. This is a redundant process without getting other areas the animal can access or use as an egress or ingress point sealed off, which included 23 feet of open drip edge as well as five plastic roof vents.

Proposed exclusion

The technician sealed off the drip edge that was accessible around the edge of the roof. A total of 23 feet of drip edge had to be sealed to prevent animals from re-entering. This was done using galvanized steel mesh, which is waterproof and long-lasting and will prevent animals from entering those areas in the future. Roof vents were also excluded as squirrels, rodents, and raccoons can chew through them or, in the case of raccoons, rip them clean off the roof. This was done with black rubber-coated galvanized steel cages attached over each vent on the roof. A total of 5 vents were excluded.

Conclusion

The technician excluded the drip edge of the roof, 23 feet of it, and also sealed off the five roof vents. The one-way door was installed at the entryway, and because the squirrel had no other points on the roof they could access, the animal vacated and did not manage to re-enter the attic space.
